What is lost attic insulation?
The attic space is the unoccupied space between the inside of the roof and the ceiling above. Lack of insulation in this area is often the cause of significant heat loss, which can amount to more than 30% of the heat in your home. This problem can lead to a certain degree of discomfort in your home, as well as a considerable increase in your energy bills.
To overcome this problem, two main insulation methods are used.
Blown-in insulation
This technique involves blowing insulation, generally cellulose wadding, in flakes into the attic to cover it. It is the most widely used method because of its effectiveness and lower cost compared with other methods.
Spreading insulation is a derivative of this method, to be used when the space to be insulated is accessible.
Unrolled insulation
This involves laying an insulating blanket, in one or more layers, on the attic floor to be insulated. Mineral wool (glass or rock) or plant wool can be used, depending on which is best suited to the specific characteristics of your home.
Insulation using rigid panels
This is a more rarely used technique. It involves laying panels of polystyrene (expanded or extruded), polyurethane or wood fibre on the attic floor and roof. The work is simpler to carry out and the method is effective, especially in summer.
How much does it cost to insulate lost attic space?
The price of loft insulation will include both the cost of the insulation used and the cost of labour. It generally works out at around 40 per m². Don't hesitate to ask for a quote on our website to get a more precise idea.
You can also benefit from certain renovation grants provided by organisations that encourage this type of process to reduce your energy consumption. Some of these will be more accessible if you use an RGE craftsman to carry out the work.
