Pool enclosure formalities: Practical guide

Are you planning to build a pool enclosure? If so, you'll certainly need to find out about the formalities involved in obtaining planning permission, the rules and the various obligations.

These aspects can create confusion and doubts, which is why we're going to give you all the information you need to build or renovate your pool enclosure.

Why install a pool enclosure?

Pool enclosures offer a number of advantages, conveniences and benefits, such as easier pool maintenance, safety, longer swimming time and longer water life. Among other things, this saves water. Keeping the cover on the pool day and night leaves leaves and other debris behind the pool glass.

It also reduces waste and the use of chemicals during maintenance. They prevent soil, leaves, insects and other debris from mixing with the water.

What regulations apply to the construction of a pool enclosure?

Two essential factors need to be taken into account in the formalities for building a pool enclosure. These are the height of the enclosure and the surface area of the pool in question. It should also be noted that the regulations in force differ depending on when the pool enclosure is built.

The rules for building a pool enclosure at the same time as the pool itself are different from those that apply if the enclosure is built after the pool.

Building the pool enclosure

If the pool is already built and needs a cover after a given period, planning permission is required if the pool cover is 1.80 m or more in height. It should be noted that in this case, whatever the size of the pool, the rule applies.

Construction of the shelter while the pool is being built

Here's what the law says if you have to build the pool enclosure at the same time as the pool:

  • If the pool area is less than 10 m², no formalities are required if the enclosure is less than 1.80 m high. You will, however, need to go to the town hall to consult the PLU in force in your area. You can then choose between a low or medium-height shelter;
  • If the surface area of your pool to be built is between 10 m² and 100 m², you will need planning permission for the enclosure if it is more than 1.80 m high. However, if the height is less than this, all you need to do is submit a simple prior declaration to the relevant authorities;
  • If your pool is larger than 100 m², you will need to apply for and obtain planning permission, regardless of the height of the pool enclosure.
