External wall insulation: which techniques?
Various methods can be used to achieve effective ITE. The choice of the most appropriate technique will depend essentially on the specifics of your building and your tastes.
Insulation under cladding
Insulation under cladding is a technique that is both effective and aesthetically pleasing. Particularly recommended for damaged facades, it will allow you to radically change the appearance of the facade at the same time.
This is usually done by first fitting a metal frame to the walls, then attaching insulating panels to the frame. These can be made of PVC, aluminium or wood, depending on what is most suitable.
Insulation under plaster
This is a more customisable solution in terms of finishes and colours. Depending on the result you want to achieve, you can choose between two types of plaster:
- hydraulic rendering: which gives you a wider choice of finishes;
- Organic rendering: for a smoother, more even finish.
It should be noted that this is not the technique best suited to deteriorated façades.
External wall insulation: what type of insulation should you choose?
The effectiveness of your insulation will depend largely on the materials used. So will the total cost of the work. So choosing the right materials is an important step in your renovation process.
Bio-sourced insulation
Bio-sourced insulation is generally made from plants (wood wool, hemp wool, flax wool, etc.) or animal wool. They are waterproof and effective over the long term. And they have a smaller environmental footprint than other types of insulation.
Synthetic insulation
Synthetic insulation materials generally offer good value for money. They can be made from polystyrene, polyurethane or phenolic foam. Synthetic materials are also lighter and more waterproof.
However, they do not offer the best possible sound insulation, nor are they the best ecological solution.
Mineral insulation
Mineral insulation is made from limestone, sand, glass wool or rock wool. They are particularly resistant to moisture and heat, and provide very good thermal and acoustic insulation.
How much does external insulation cost?
The price of external insulation will depend mainly on the technique used and the materials used. For example, plastered insulation is considered less expensive than cladding insulation, while synthetic insulation is less expensive than mineral insulation.
However, the price of an ITE could cost :
- between 140 230 per m² for cladding insulation;
. between 110 and €180 per m² for insulation under plaster.
